Our Story

Before founding The Cove, Angela taught in K-12 schools, with a special focus in writing, literature, history, and holds a Maters degree in adolescent emotional development. Devon is a middle grades STEM specialist with her Ph.D. in informal science education. Together they bring over 40 years of educational expertise, centered on student-driven, hands-on discovery that makes learning feel like play.

The Cove partners with K-College learners to offer individualized tutoring, custom classes for homeschool pods, and educational advising.

Why “The Cove”

With over 45 K-12 schools in Santa Barbara, each with their own curriculum and culture, navigating the education landscape can feel like sailing on rough waters. Coves are small costal inlets known for their calm atmosphere. This definition shapes our work. Our approach to education centers on creating a safe environment for small groups of curious learners without the overwhelming elements that can be present in traditional classrooms.

“Dear Mrs. Devon, Thank you for challenging me and pushing me in physics. It was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but I truly enjoyed it… Thank you for making your classroom the joyful and welcoming classroom I have been in.”

Testimonials

“Ms. Angela, I simply can’t overstate that you truly taught me how to  write. Before your class, writing a paper was an unfathomably complicated and painful ordeal, but through well thought-out and information rich classes you taught me formulas and tricks to write easily and well. I still (just like you said I would) use the same five paragraph formula you taught me in all my papers, and without the knowledge you gave me I would surely have failed any essay tests simply because I ran out of time.”

“Thank you Ms. Angela, in the short amount of time that my son has been in your class he has nothing but good things to say about his experience with you. Thank you for being such a great teacher and taking care of my kiddo.”

“Dear Devon, I almost always hate math, but I somehow looked forward to going to tutoring every week because you made it easy and fun… If I did my math homework this year it was always because I worked on it with you.”
